California Paycheck Calculator Methodology (2026)

This document explains the technical formulas, tax schedules, thresholds, and rounding conventions behind our 2026 California paycheck withholding models. It covers gross-to-net paycheck calculations, California bonus withholding comparisons, overtime calculations, and salary after-tax benchmarks.

Our tools estimate employer payroll withholding under federal and California rules. They do not calculate final end-of-year tax liability on Form 1040 or California Form 540.

1. Core Calculation Order & Architecture

To produce a single-paycheck estimate, the engine evaluates wage items in a strict order so pre-tax deductions reduce only the tax bases for which they qualify under federal and California law:

1. Total Gross Wages = Base Wages + Overtime Pay + Supplemental/Bonus Pay
2. Subject FICA Wages = Total Gross – Qualifying Pre-Tax Deductions (e.g., Section 125 Medical/Dental/FSA, HSA, Commuter)
3. Subject Federal Taxable Wages = Subject FICA Wages – Qualifying Pre-Tax Retirement (e.g., Traditional 401k, 403b, 457b, SIMPLE IRA)
4. Subject California Taxable Wages = Total Gross – Qualifying Pre-Tax Deductions – Qualifying Pre-Tax Retirement (Adjusted for California tax law differences)
5. Calculate Employee FICA Taxes (Social Security + Medicare + Additional Medicare)
6. Calculate California State Disability Insurance (SDI)
7. Calculate Federal Income Tax (FIT) Withholding (IRS Pub 15-T Percentage Method)
8. Calculate California Personal Income Tax (PIT) Withholding (EDD Method B Exact Calculation Method)
9. Calculate Post-Tax Deductions (e.g., Roth 401k, Union Dues, Garnishments)
10. Net Take-Home Pay = Total Gross – (FIT + PIT + Social Security + Medicare + Additional Medicare + SDI) – Pre-Tax Deductions – Post-Tax Deductions

2. Federal Income Tax Withholding (2026 IRS Publication 15-T)

Federal withholding follows the 2026 IRS Publication 15-T automated percentage method for 2020-or-later Forms W-4.

Step 2a: Annualize Taxable Wages

Paycheck taxable wage is multiplied by the annual pay periods N (Weekly = 52, Biweekly = 26, Semi-Monthly = 24, Monthly = 12):
Annualized Taxable Wages = Paycheck Taxable Wages × N

Step 2b: Adjust Annualized Wages for W-4 Inputs

Adjusted Annual Wage = Annualized Taxable Wages + W-4 Step 4(a) [Other Income] – W-4 Step 4(b) [Deductions]

Step 2c: Apply 2026 Federal Tax Brackets

Tentative Annual Tax is calculated using the applicable 2026 IRS Percentage Method tax table based on filing status (Single/Married Filing Separately, Married Filing Jointly, Head of Household) and whether the W-4 Step 2 box is checked.

Step 2d: Account for Credits & Additional Withholding

1. Tentative Annual Tax after Credits = MAX(0, Tentative Annual Tax – W-4 Step 3 [Tax Credits])
2. Base Paycheck Federal Withholding = Tentative Annual Tax after Credits ÷ N
3. Final Paycheck Federal Withholding = Base Paycheck Federal Withholding + W-4 Step 4(c) [Extra Withholding]

3. California Personal Income Tax Withholding (2026 EDD Method B)

California PIT withholding is computed using the California Employment Development Department (EDD) 2026 Method B – Exact Calculation Method, which is the official mathematical standard for automated payroll systems.

Step 3a: Calculate Annual Gross & Standard Deduction

1. Annualized CA Taxable Wages = Paycheck CA Taxable Wages × N
2. Subtract Standard Deduction based on DE 4 filing status and 2026 EDD tables (Single/Married 0-1 Allowances: $5,540; Married 2+ Allowances / Joint: $11,080; Head of Household: $11,080).
3. Subtract Allowance Value: Regular Allowances × $164.20 per allowance (2026 EDD annual allowance value).

Step 3b: Apply 2026 California Progressive Tax Brackets

Taxable Income after deductions and allowances is passed through the 2026 California progressive bracket schedules (1.0%, 2.0%, 4.0%, 6.0%, 8.0%, 9.3%, 10.3%, 11.3%, 12.3%, and the 1% Mental Health Services Tax for taxable income over $1,000,000, reaching a top marginal rate of 13.3%).

Step 3c: Apply Exemption Credits & Additional State Withholding

1. Subtract Exemption Credits based on DE 4 regular allowances × $164.20.
2. Divide Annual California Tax by N to determine Base Paycheck CA PIT Withholding.
3. Add additional state withholding specified on Form DE 4.

4. FICA & California SDI Taxes (2026 Official Rates & Caps)

Tax Line Item2026 Rate2026 Wage Base CapThreshold Notes
Social Security (OASDI)6.20%$184,500.00Stops withholding once YTD gross reaches $184,500.
Medicare (HI)1.45%No Cap ($∞)Applies to all covered wages without annual limit.
Additional Medicare Tax0.90%No Cap ($∞)Withheld on YTD employer pay exceeding $200,000 (Single/Joint).
California SDI1.30%No Cap ($∞)SB 951 eliminated the SDI wage cap; applies to all subject pay.

California State Disability Insurance (SDI) Note

Effective January 1, 2024, and continued into 2026 under SB 951, California eliminated the taxable wage limit for SDI. All wages subject to California SDI are taxed at 1.30% regardless of total annual earnings. California Paid Family Leave (PFL) is funded through the SDI contribution and is not a separate line-item payroll tax.

5. Bonus & Supplemental Pay Withholding Methods

Our California Bonus Tax Calculator evaluates supplemental wages under two distinct withholding methods approved by the IRS and California EDD:

Method A: Flat Rate / Percentage Method

• Federal Supplemental Flat Rate: 22.0% (for supplemental pay up to $1,000,000; 37.0% for portion over $1,000,000).
• California Supplemental Flat Rate: 6.6% (Standard bonus/commission rate) or 10.23% (for stock options and deferred compensation under EDD rules).
• FICA & SDI: Standard rates (Social Security 6.2% up to cap, Medicare 1.45%, SDI 1.30%).

Method B: Aggregate Payroll Period Method

1. Combine bonus pay with regular wages for the current pay period.
2. Calculate total federal and California withholding on the combined gross as if it were a single regular paycheck.
3. Subtract the withholding already calculated on regular wages alone.
4. The difference is the withholding applied to the bonus.

6. California Overtime Calculation Formulas

Overtime calculations follow California Labor Code Section 510 and Industrial Welfare Commission (IWC) Wage Orders:

• Daily Overtime (1.5x Regular Rate): Hours worked over 8.0 up to 12.0 in a single workday, or first 8.0 hours on the 7th consecutive day of work in a workweek.
• Daily Double Time (2.0x Regular Rate): Hours worked over 12.0 in a single workday, or hours worked over 8.0 on the 7th consecutive day of work in a workweek.
• Weekly Overtime (1.5x Regular Rate): Non-overtime hours worked in excess of 40.0 hours in a single workweek.
• Regular Rate of Pay (RRP): Total compensation (base wage + non-discretionary bonuses + shift differentials) divided by total non-overtime hours worked.

7. Rounding & Precision Standards

• Intermediate Calculation Precision: Internal tax logic maintains floating-point arithmetic up to 6 decimal places.
• Paycheck Line-Item Rounding: Final withholding figures for each line item (FIT, PIT, Social Security, Medicare, SDI) are rounded to the nearest cent ($0.01) per pay period using standard arithmetic rounding (half-up).
• Annualized Summaries: Annualized totals displayed on salary benchmark pages represent the sum of rounded per-paycheck withholding amounts multiplied by pay frequency N.
